Agatha Christie was an English crime novelist, short story writer, and playwright. She wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short stories. She also wrote six romances under the pen name Mary Westmacott and authored the world’s longest-running play, The Mousetrap.
Agatha Christie was born in Devon, England on 15 September 1890. Her mother Clara was an excellent storyteller but did not want Agatha to learn to read until she was 8. However, Agatha taught herself to read by the age of 5 with the help of her siblings. At 15, she was sent to Paris to study voice training and piano.
Christie wrote her first short story, “The House of Beauty,” at the age of 18 while recovering from an illness. Despite initial struggles to get her work published, her breakthrough came when The Bodley Head press published her novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1920. This marked the beginning of her illustrious writing career. She also worked in hospitals during the World War periods.
The Guinness Book of World Records lists Agatha Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Over 4 billion copies of her novels have been sold. Her works rank third in the world’s most widely published books, behind only Shakespeare’s works and the Bible. Christie is also considered the most-translated individual author, with her books available in more than 103 languages.
Agatha Christie’s final days were spent peacefully in her beloved home, Winterbrook House, surrounded by her family. She passed away on January 12, 1976, leaving a remarkable legacy. Christie’s extraordinary talent for crafting intricate plots and unforgettable characters solidified her status as the “Queen of Mystery.” Her works have been translated into over 100 languages and adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays, continuing to captivate readers and audiences worldwide. Today, she remains a towering figure in literature.
