He also won seven major championships: The Masters four times, the U.S. Open once, and the Open Championship twice. He was the first player in history to win The Masters four times and the first one to earn over a Million in career prize money.
Arnold Palmer was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to a working-class family. He learned to play golf at the Latrobe Country Club. He enrolled at Wake Forest College on a golf scholarship but dropped out after his friend died in a car accident and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard before returning to competitive golf.
The expansion of televised golf in the late 1950s and early 1960s coincided with Palmer’s rise to fame. His aggressive style of play appealed to his large and loyal fan base. He was a strong ambassador for the sport who played in exhibition matches around the world to promote golf on the global stage.
Palmer’s career took off in the early 1960s when he won 29 PGA Tour events, which included six majors. He made an incredible comeback after trailing by seven strokes to win his first Open Championship in 1961. He won his second Open Championship a year later.

Despite his declining health, Palmer remained engaged with the sport and his friends until the end. On September 25, 2016, at the age of 87, Arnold Palmer passed away in Pittsburgh due to complications from heart problems. He had been admitted to the hospital on Thursday prior and was scheduled for heart surgery on the following Monday. Palmer’s death marked the end of an era in golf, but his legacy lives on.
