Avicii, known by his real name Tim Bergling, was a Swedish DJ, remixer, record producer, musician, and songwriter who gained global recognition with his 2011 hit single “Levels”. Tim was born on 8 September 1989, in Stockholm, Sweden. He is widely acknowledged as a trailblazer in the contemporary electronic dance music (EDM) scene and has had a significant influence on numerous other artists within the genre.
At the age of 16, Avicii began his career by sharing his remixes on online forums which caught the attention of music labels and promoters. In 2010, he signed with EMI Music Publishing and released his first major success, “Seek Bromance”, under the moniker Tim Berg. Later on, he adopted the stage name Avicii, derived from the Sanskrit term meaning “the lowest level of Buddhist hell”.
Avicii’s breakthrough moment came with “Levels”, a track that incorporated vocal samples from Etta James’ song “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”. He continued to release successful singles such as “I Could Be the One” featuring Nicky Romero, “Wake Me Up” featuring Aloe Blacc, and “Hey Brother” featuring Dan Tyminski.
Avicii released two albums, True in 2013 and Stories in 2015, both of which received praise from critics and achieved commercial success. He experimented with various musical genres by blending elements of folk, soul, rock, and pop into his EDM sound which added a bit of depth to his music.
Avicii’s personal life suffered greatly because of his health issues and mental stress caused by his demanding tour schedule and lifestyle. He suffered from acute pancreatitis, partly due to excessive alcohol consumption and underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder and appendix in 2014.
Additionally, he was pressured by his management and fans to produce more music and perform more shows which only added to his mental stress. He retired from touring in 2016 and focused solely on creating music in the studio.
On April 20, 2018, Avicii was discovered deceased in a hotel room in Muscat, Oman, at the age of 28. Subsequently, it was confirmed that he had taken his own life by inflicting self-harm with a broken wine bottle.
