Spock was born on May 2, 1903, in New Haven, Connecticut. He was the son of Benjamin Ives and Mildred Louise (Stoughton) Spock.
Spock’s family name originated from Dutch. While growing up, his family migrated to the former colony of New Netherland.
Spock started his education at Hamden Hall Country Day School. He later went on to attend his father’s alma mater, Phillips Andover Academy, and Yale University.
Spock studied literature and history at Yale. He was also active in college rowing and joined the Olympic rowing crew (Men’s Eights) that won a gold medal at the 1924 games in Paris.
He furthered his education by studying medicine at Columbia University and psychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. After completing his studies, Spock became a pediatrician and professor.
One of Spock’s most renowned works, “Baby and Child Care”, was first published in 1946 and went on to sell over 50 million copies before his passing in 1998.
This influential book advocated for a more flexible and affectionate approach to parenting, challenging the prevailing authoritarian methods of the time. In addition to discussing topics such as breastfeeding and toilet training, Spock provided practical advice to parents on how to navigate common problems and situations.
Spock was married twice. He married Jane Cheney in 1927. Cheney played a vital role in his life by assisting with his most famous work, Dr. Spock’s Baby & Child Care.
The couple had two sons before they divorced in 1976. Spock later married Mary Morgan that same year, with whom he built a home on Beaver Lake in Arkansas.
Benjamin Spock passed away in 1998 at the age of 94.
