Betty White was an American actress, comedian, and producer who enjoyed a long and illustrious career that spanned seven decades. Her most notable roles include Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls, and Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland.
White was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and was the only child to Horace and Christine White. Her family shifted to Los Angeles during the Great Depression. She developed a love for animals from an early age and initially wanted to be a forest ranger, but women weren’t allowed to do that at that time.
White debuted on television in 1939 on an experimental station. In 1949, she started appearing regularly on Hollywood on Television, a live variety show. Betty also hosted her own show, which was called The Betty White Show. She won her first Emmy Award in 1951 for being “the best new personality” on TV.
She also appeared on many shows such as Password, Match Game, To Tell the Truth, and the $25,000 Pyramid. Betty White married Allen Ludden, the host of Password, in 1963. She considered him the love of her life and never remarried after he passed away in 1981.
White’s career reached new heights in the 1970s when she was cast as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In 1985, she landed another iconic role as Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls, which helped establish her as one of the most beloved actresses on TV.
White continued to work on television and films after The Golden Girls ended in 1992 with guest roles on The Carol Burnett Show, The Bold and Beautiful, Boston Legal, That ‘70s Show, Ugly Betty, and many more. White gained a resurgence in her career in the late 2000s and early 2010s after she co-starred with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal. She also hosted Saturday Night Live in 2010 after a fan campaign on Facebook.
Betty White was known for being fond of all kinds of animals and even advocated for their rights. She supported many animal welfare organizations.
White passed away in 2021 at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 99.
