Biz Markie was an American rapper, singer, and DJ who gained fame for his hit single “Just A Friend” as well as his insane beatboxing skills. He was born Marcel Theo Hall in 1964 in Harlem, New York.
He began his career as a beatboxer for Juice Crew and made his debut on the 1985 single “The Def Fresh Crew” before appearing in other Juice Crew songs such as “The Symphony” and “Nobody Beats the Biz”.
Biz Markie released his first solo album in 1988 titled “Goin’ Off”, which further showcased his beatboxing skills. He followed it up with his next album “The Biz Never Sleeps”, which featured the hit single “Just A Friend”. The song was a commercial success and reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also his only song to have cracked the Hot 100.
Biz Markie released his third album in 1991, which was marked by controversy after singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan filed a lawsuit against the rapper, claiming that he had illegally sampled his song “Alone Again (Naturally)” on the track “Alone Again”. The case resulted in a ruling that established the need for sample clearance in the music industry. Biz was ordered to pay $250,000 in damages and recall and destroy all unsold copies of the album.
Biz Markie released his fourth album in 1993, cheekily titled “All Samples Cleared!”. The album was a commercial failure, but Biz received rave reviews from critics. He released his fifth and final album, “Weekend Warrior”, in 2003.
Biz Markie spent his final days in a Baltimore hospital, battling health issues related to type 2 diabetes. He had been struggling with diabetes complications for over a year. On July 16, 2021, at 6:25 p.m., Biz Markie passed away at the age of 57. His wife, Tara Hall, was by his side, holding his hand during his last moments.
