Buddy Holly was an American singer and songwriter who was one of the pioneers of rock and roll music in the 1950s.
Holly was born as Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. He was the youngest child of Lawrence Odell “L.O.” Holley and Ella Pauline Drake.
Holly was of mostly English and Welsh descent and had small amounts of Native American ancestry as well.
Holly got the nickname ‘Buddy’ from his early childhood. Holly’s music interest started from a young age with almost all his family members knowing how to play an instrument or sing.
While growing up, Holly tried his best to learn how to play musical instruments such as violin, guitar, and piano. Although it wasn’t an easy journey for him, Holly later settled down for guitar.
As a young child, Holly was also influenced by the music of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Moon Mullican, Bill Monroe, Hank Snow, Bob Wills, and the Carter Family.
Holly attended Roscoe Wilson Elementary, where he became friends with Bob Montgomery. The two played together, practicing with songs by The Louvin Brothers and Johnnie & Jack.
At the time of his high school, Holly also made friends with Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison who were musicians too.
Holly formed his first band in 1952 called Buddy and Bop with his friend Bob Montgomery. Country, western swing, and blues music had a great influence on his musical style.
After graduating high school, Holly decided to pursue a career in music. He would then open for Elvis Presley and Bill Haley & His Comets. During this time, his music transitioned from country and western to rock and roll.
Impressed with his musical talents, Eddie Crandall convinced Grand Ole Opry’s manager Jim Denny to seek a recording deal for Holly. He was then signed to Decca Records in 1956. However, Decca Records and Holly parted ways after a year.
Holly then formed another band called The Crickets with drummer Jerry Allison, bassist Joe B. Mauldin, and guitarist Niki Sullivan. Together, they recorded several hit songs which fused together a combination of catchy melodies, simple lyrics, and a distinctive vocal style.
Holly also pursued a solo career and recorded several songs that experimented with various musical styles and techniques. He also influenced the development of the electric guitar by using a Fender Stratocaster, which became his signature instrument.
Holly was married to María Elena Santiago in 1958. Although she was a few months pregnant, she lost the baby immediately after Holly’s death in 1959. They were only married for six months.
Holly’s promising career was cut short when he was involved in a tragic plane crash that took his life in 1959. Holly was only 22 years old at the time of his death.
