Chuck Berry was a legendary American musician, songwriter, and rock and roll pioneer.
Berry is known as one of the most influential figures in the history of popular music. He was born as Charles Edward Anderson Berry on September 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.
Chuck Berry was the youngest child of Henry William Berry, a contractor and deacon of a nearby Baptist church, and his mother, Martha Bell (Banks), a certified public school principal.
Young Berry grew up in a middle-class black family, where he developed an interest in music and gave his first public performance at Sumner High School.
Unfortunately, during high school, Berry was convicted of armed robbery and was sent to a reformatory, where he was held from 1944 to 1947.
Berry learned to play the guitar at a young age and officially started his music career in 1952. His innovative guitar style, characterized by his signature double-string bends and energetic stage performances, later became a defining element of rock and roll.
Berry rose to prominence after signing with Chess Records in the 1950s. His debut single, “Maybellene”, was an instant hit and reached number one on the R&B charts. He followed this with numerous chart-topping hits.
Berry was a master songwriter. His lyrics explored themes of teenage life, cars, and romance, which resonated with a young audience. He electrified audiences across the world with his energetic stage presence and continued to perform and record music in his later years.
Right after Berry got out of prison, he married Themetta Suggs in 1948. The couple had four children.
Chuck Berry sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 90.
