David James Myers was born on September 8, 1957, in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England. His early life was marked by both challenge and resilience. As a child, Dave took on significant responsibilities when his mother, Margaret, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He became her primary caregiver, cleaning the house, cooking family meals, and helping to care for his mother, who was in a wheelchair.

Education and Early Career

Despite the challenges at home, Myers pursued his education with determination. He attended grammar school and later went on to complete a fine art degree at Goldsmiths, University of London. He followed this with an MA in art history. Myers’ early career was diverse. He worked as a furnaceman at a local steelworks while studying for his degrees. In 1980, he joined the BBC as a trainee makeup artist, specializing in prosthetics.

Meeting Si King and The Hairy Bikers

The turning point in Dave Myers’ career came in 1995 when he met Si King on the set of a Catherine Cookson TV adaptation, “The Gambling Man.” Myers was working as the head of hair and makeup, while King was an assistant director. Their friendship blossomed over a shared love of food and motorcycles. Their first cooking collaboration happened at a New Year’s Eve party at King’s place, where they prepared spiced roast pork with sticky rice.

Rise to Fame

In 2004, Myers and King launched their first TV show, “The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook.” The show combined their passions for cooking and motorcycle travel, starting with a journey through Portugal. This led to numerous other shows and over 25 cookbooks.

Personal Life and Challenges

Myers married Liliana Orzac, a Romanian-born designer, in 2011. Despite his jovial on-screen persona, Myers faced personal challenges. He was open about his struggles with alcohol and underwent a significant lifestyle change, losing three stone in 2012.In 2022, Myers revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Despite this, he continued to work on projects with King when his health allowed.

Other Ventures and Achievements

In 2013, Dave Myers participated in “Strictly Come Dancing,” reaching week seven of the competition. This appearance broadened his fan base, though it also attracted some criticism, which he handled with characteristic humor. Myers’ success extended beyond television. His production company, Sharpletter, was valued at over £1.4 million, and he co-owned another company, Hairy Bikers Television, with Si King.

Legacy and Death

Dave Myers passed away on February 28, 2024, at the age of 66, after a battle with cancer. His death was mourned by fans and colleagues alike, who remembered him for his warmth, humor, and passion for food and life.
