Don Bradman was an Australian cricketer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Test batsmen of all time.
He played 52 Test matches for Australia from 1928 to 1948 and scored 6,996 runs at an astonishing average of 99.94. He also scored 28,067 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 95.15 with a record 117 centuries to his name.
Bradman was known for his elegant and powerful strokeplay, his exceptional concentration, and his ability to dominate any bowling attack.
Donald Bradman was born on 27 August 1908 in Cootamundra, New South Wales. He was the youngest son of George and Emily (née Whatman) Bradman.
Bradman was of English heritage on both sides of his family. Although Bradman was born in Cootamundra, his family relocated to Bowral.
As a young child, Bradman developed a passion for cricket. He even went as far as inventing his own solo cricket game, using a cricket stump for a bat and a golf ball.
Bradman also practiced his cricket skills by participating and playing for Bowral Public School against Mittagong High School.
Bradman honed his skills by practicing with a cricket stump and a golf ball against a water tank. He made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 1927 and his Test debut for Australia a year later.
He quickly established himself as a prolific run-scorer setting many records that still stand today.
He scored the most runs by any batsman in a single Test series when he scored 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes series in England.
Bradman had a penchant to dominate the English bowlers. He scored two double centuries in one Test match against England in 1937.
Bradman’s career was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served in the Royal Australian Air Force. He retired from cricket in 1948 after Australia’s tour of England. He fell just four runs short of achieving a career average of 100. He was knighted in 1949 for his services to cricket.
Bradman was married to Jessie Martha Menzies in 1920. The couple had two surviving children.
He passed away in 2001 at the age of 92.
