For anyone who enjoys those high-quality documentaries and films that the NFL puts together on a regular basis, they should thank Ed Sabol who started the company. In addition to this, Sabol was a famous American filmmaker.
Ed Sabol was born on September 11, 1916, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, U.S. He was born to a Jewish mother and Romanian father.
Given where he ended up in his career, it should come as no surprise that he excelled in football, swimming, and track at Blair Academy where he attended school. He attended Ohio State University but dropped out after his freshman year to pursue a career in show business.
Ed Sabol started his career appearing in shows. He worked in various roles in show business before enlisting in the United States Army.
Sabol also served during World War II. He returned to New York after the war and married Audrey Katz.
Sabol developed a passion for filmmaking in the 1950s when he started filming his family vacations and his son’s youth football games.
In 1962, he doubled down on his passion and bid $3,000 for the rights to film the NFL Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.
After securing the winning bid, he formed Blair Motion Pictures, named after his daughter. Sabol’s film of the game impressed Pete Rozelle who was the NFL commissioner at that time, and he hired him to be the league’s official filmmaker.
Sabol renamed his company to NFL Films and moved to New Jersey. He hired his son Steve to work with him, and together they revolutionized sports broadcasting with their innovative techniques and styles.
Sabol remained involved in NFL Films until his retirement in 1995.
Sabol was married to Audrey Sabol. They had a son named Steve Sabol.
He passed away in 2015 at the age of 98.
