Estée Lauder, originally named Josephine Esther Mentzer, was an American entrepreneur and one of the founders of the famous cosmetics company that carries her name.
Estee Lauder was born as Josephine Esther Mentzer in 1908 in Queens, New York, to parents who had immigrated from Hungary and were of Jewish descent.
Lauder was the second child of Rose Schotz and Max Mentzer. She had a difficult childhood.
She started working at the age of eight to make ends meet. From these jobs, Lauder gained first-hand experience from running a business and entrepreneurship.
When she grew much older, Lauder offered to assist her uncle, Dr. John Schotz, with his business.
While working in her uncle’s business, Lauder exhibited a keen interest in beauty and skincare from a young age. Her uncle, a chemist, taught her about creams and lotions, fueling her passion for the industry.
In 1930, Estée Lauder married Joseph Lauter (later changed to Lauder), and together they embarked on a journey that would forever transform the cosmetics business.
After years of hard work and dedication, Estée Lauder introduced her own brand in 1946. Initially offering only four products – Super Rich All-Purpose Creme, Creme Pack, Cleansing Oil, and Skin Lotion – she personally demonstrated their effectiveness to potential customers, firmly believing in hands-on marketing.
Her perseverance paid off when she secured her first store at the prestigious Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City.
As the brand gained recognition and popularity, Estée Lauder expanded its reach internationally, establishing stores in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.
Consumers worldwide were drawn to the company’s commitment to quality and luxury. Over time, Estée Lauder’s portfolio expanded to include other well-known brands like Clinique, Bobbi Brown, and MAC Cosmetics, further solidifying its presence in the cosmetics industry.
Estee was married to Joseph Lauter when she was in her early twenties. The couple later changed their last name from Lauter to Lauder.
The couple’s marriage was quite an interesting one. They got married in 1930 and divorced in 1939 but two years later they remarried in 1942. Estee and her husband had two sons.
Unfortunately, Estée Lauder passed away in 2004 at the remarkable age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and success that continues to thrive today.
