Fred Ward was one unarguable of the expectational American actors who graced his appearance in over 70 films and television shows.
Popularly known for his rugged charm and compelling performances across a diverse array of film genres. Indeed, Ward was a treasured talent in Hollywood.
Ward was born in San Diego on December 30, 1942. He lived a troubled childhood since his father was an alcoholic who was constantly imprisoned and his mother left him at three.
As a child, Ward was single-handedly raised by his grandmother until his mother had rebuilt her life and remarried a carnival worker.
Ward graduated from Roosevelt High School in San Antonio, Texas in 1960 and joined the United States Air Force.
After his military service, Ward returned to Berkeley, California where he studied languages and journalism at the University of California.
Ward’s interest in acting led him to study at New York’s Herbert Berghof Studio. He then went to Europe, where he dubbed Italian movies into English and appeared in films by neorealist director Roberto Rossellini.
His first American film appearance was in “Hearts of the West” (1975), but his first major role came in Clint Eastwood’s “Escape from Alcatraz” (1979), where he played fellow escapee John Anglin. Ward was able to get his acting career kick started before he returned to the United States in 1978 and made his Hollywood debut in Robert Altman’s A Wedding.
This debut movie launched into the limelight and paved the way for him to appear in other many notable movies.
Ward got his two most acclaimed roles in 1990 in the movie “Tremors” and “Henry & June”.
Ward continued to act in films and television shows until 2015.
Ward was married to Marie-France Boisselle in 1995. He had a son from his previous marriage to his first wife, Saliva Ward.
Although, his second marriage to Marie-France Boisselle wasn’t rosy. The duo nearly got divorced in 2013 and they overcame their issues and reconciled the same year.
After a remarkable career in acting, Ward passed away in 2022 at the age of 79.
Fred Ward’s career spanned over four decades, and he left an indelible mark on Hollywood through his portrayals of complex characters in both mainstream and independent cinema. He won a Golden Globe Special Ensemble Cast Award for “Short Cuts” (1993).
