Gene Kelly was an American dancer, actor, singer, film director, and choreographer who was known for his energetic and innovative performances.
He was a prominent figure in the golden age of Hollywood musicals and left a lasting impression on the world of dance and entertainment.
Gene Kelly was born as Eugene Curran Kelly on August 23, 1912, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S. He was the middle of 5 children of James Patrick Joseph Kelly, a phonograph salesman, and his wife, Harriet Catherine Curran.
At a young age, Kelly’s mother enrolled him and his brother in a dance class alongside their sisters. But Kelly didn’t like the dance class because he and his brother were teased by the neighborhood boys. Although Kelly returned to the dance class when he was 15 and could defend himself.
Kelly attended St. Raphael Elementary School in the Morningside neighborhood of Pittsburgh and graduated from Peabody High School at age 16.
He briefly attended Pennsylvania State College as a journalism major, but after the 1929 crash, he left school and found work in order to help his family financially.
To survive, Kelly and his younger brother created dance routines for local contests and performed in local nightclubs.
In 1931, Kelly enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh to study economics and graduated in 1933.
Kelly’s career began on Broadway in the 1940s where he quickly rose to prominence for his athletic dancing style and charisma. He got his big break when he starred in the 1940s musical “Pal Joey” which resulted in him being offered a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
Kelly helped revolutionize the genre with his innovative approach to dance and choreography. He blended elements of ballet, tap, and jazz into his dance style. This helped him stand out from his contemporaries.
Kelly was also known for his impressive acting and singing skills. He was able to add depth and emotion to his performances, which showcased his versatility.
Kelly was a genuinely nice guy off-screen, and he dedicated his time to various charitable and philanthropic endeavors.
Kelly was married three times. His first marriage was to actress Betsy Blair in 1941, whom he had a child with.
He later married Jeanne Coyne in 1960. The two had two children, and they stayed married until Coyne’s death in 1973.
Kelly also married Patricia Ward in 1990, and the marriage lasted till his death. Sadly, Kelly passed away in 1996 at the age of 83.
