Burns didn’t get the chance to go to school due to his father dying early from the influenza pandemic. Instead, Burns went to work to help support the family through shining shoes, running errands, and selling newspapers.

Burns later got a job as a syrup maker in a local candy shop at age seven, where his talents were discovered. Along the line, Burns picked up the habit of smoking cigars at a young age.

Military Service and Name Change

Before going into entertainment, Burns was drafted into the US Army during World War I but failed to get in due to his failure in the physical examination. He later pivoted to a stage career, where he had to change his name to hide his Jewish identity.

Rise in Vaudeville

Gradually, Burns shifted from stage to screen, beginning his comedic journey in vaudeville, where he formed a successful partnership with his wife Gracie Allen. Their comedy act was known as “Burns and Allen.” Together, they captivated audiences with their witty banter and playful dynamic.

Burns and Allen shifted from vaudeville to radio in the 1930s, where they enjoyed immense success with their show “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show.” The program showcased their unique comedic style, establishing them as one of the most beloved couples in entertainment.
