Gloria Swanson was an American actress, producer, and fashion icon. She gained fame during the silent film era.

Swanson was born in a small house in Chicago in 1899. She was the only child of Adelaide (née Klanowski) and Joseph Theodore Swanson (née Svensson), a soldier.
Young Swanson was raised in the Lutheran faith. Swanson’s father was a Swedish American and her mother was of German, French, and Polish ancestry.
She spent most of her childhood in Key West, Florida, where she was enrolled in a Catholic convent school, and in Puerto Rico, where she saw her first motion pictures.
Swanson commenced her acting journey as an extra in 1914. Her talent caught the eye of esteemed director Cecil B. DeMille, leading to her casting in several of his films.
Swanson swiftly became a sensation at the box office, captivating audiences with her on-screen performances and off-screen fashion sense, characterized by elaborate costumes.
However, the arrival of sound films marked a decline in Swanson’s once-promising career. She faced challenges adapting to this new era of cinema.
Nevertheless, she made a triumphant comeback in 1950 with the movie “Sunset Boulevard”, where she portrayed Norma Desmond, a faded star from the silent film era. The film achieved great commercial success.
Swanson continued to grace the silver screen until the late 1970s, leaving an indelible mark on the film industry.
Swanson was married six times and divorced five times. Her last marriage was to William Duffy. The marriage lasted till Swanson died of a heart ailment in 1983.
