Henri Nestlé, born Heinrich Nestle, was a German-Swiss confectioner and pharmacist who is famous for founding the world’s largest food and beverage company, Nestlé, and a pioneer in the field of infant nutrition. Nestlé was born on 10 August 1814 in Frankfurt am Main and was the eleventh of fourteen children to Johann Ulrich Matthias Nestle and Anna Maria Catharina Ehemann. His father, Johann Ulrich Nestle, had a successful business in glazier’s, responsible for cutting, removing, and installing glass.
In 1834, Nestle finished a four-year apprenticeship with J. E. Stein, the owner of a Frankfurt pharmacy, before he turned 20. After that, he received official authorization in Lausanne, Vaud to make and dispense chemical prescriptions, conduct experiments, and sell medicine in 1839. During his early career, Nestle volunteered in various activities including the production of rapeseed oil, nut oils, liqueurs, rum, absinthe, vinegar, carbonated mineral water, and lemonade. He also ventured into gas lighting and fertilizer production.
By 1867, Henri Nestlé noticed the high rates of infant mortality and also came to know about the work of Justus von Liebig on infant formula, and the unavailability of fresh milk in some areas. He combined milk with grain and sugar to create an alternative for breast milk. With the help of his friend Jean Balthasar Schnetzler, they improved the product by removing the starch and some of the sugars from the wheat flour to improve its digestibility for infants. He administered his infant formula to a newborn who was very ill. The infant healed and his product, Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé, became a well-liked and convenient product for mothers who were unable to breastfeed due to its easy preparation.
His product was sold all over Europe, which gained him instant popularity. By the 1870s, Nestlé’s new infant food, made with malt, cow’s milk, sugar, and wheat flour, was also popular and selling in the US. The success of Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé helped him to expand his company and develop other products like condensed milk, which he also sold under his brand.
In 1875, Henri Nestlé officially retired and sold his company to his business associates. On 7 July 1890, Henri Nestlé passed away in Glion at the age of 75. His persistence, determination, and innovation have helped other entrepreneurs during his time and in the present. His legacy continues to remind us that anything is possible.
