James Stewart was an American actor and military officer who is considered one of the most versatile actors of all time. He starred in many classical films during his career and won numerous awards and accolades.
Stewart was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 1908 as the oldest of three children. His father was a hardware store owner and pianist. He developed an interest for acting at an early age and participated in various school plays. Stewart majored in architecture from Princeton University and joined the Triangle Club, a musical-comedy troupe. After graduating from college, he moved to New York to pursue a full-time career in theater.
Stewart made his film debut in the 1935 movie The Murder Man. It didn’t take long for him to establish himself as a top leading man in Hollywood. He got to work with the top directors and his versatility allowed him to portray a wide range of characters on screen.
Stewart was also a distinguished military officer who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the United States Air Force Reserve during the Korean War. He rose through the ranks and became brigadier general. Stewart flew more than 20 combat missions as a bomber pilot. He received numerous medals and awards for his service. He retired from military service in 1968 after 27 years of service.
James Stewart spent his final days at his home in Beverly Hills, California. In December 1996, he opted not to have the battery in his pacemaker replaced, choosing to let nature take its course. On June 25, 1997, Stewart developed a blood clot in his right leg, which led to a pulmonary embolism. His health rapidly declined over the next week.
On July 2, 1997, at the age of 89, James Stewart passed away from cardiac arrest at 11:05 am. He was surrounded by his children in his final moments. Stewart’s last words were, “I’m going to be with Gloria now,” referring to his beloved wife who had died three years earlier. His death came just one day after fellow Hollywood legend Robert Mitchum had passed away.
James Stewart left behind an extraordinary legacy in film and public service. He starred in over 80 movies, earning five Academy Award nominations and winning one for “The Philadelphia Story”. Stewart’s military career was equally impressive, rising from private to colonel in just four years during World War II and eventually achieving the rank of brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve. His contributions to cinema, his service to his country, and his reputation as a man of integrity and humility continue to inspire generations of actors and audiences alike.
