Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Ferriday, Louisiana, where he began playing piano at a young age. Influenced by boogie-woogie, blues, country, and gospel music, Lewis developed a unique style that blended rhythm and blues with country and western.
As a young musician, Lewis showcased his talent at school assemblies, talent shows, and religious revivals. His musical style was shaped by local musicians and the church, blending elements of country, gospel, and rhythm and blues into his performances.
In 1956, Lewis’s career took off when he signed with Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, under the guidance of Sam Philips, who had also launched the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. Lewis’s first major hit came in 1957 with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” a rock-and-roll anthem.
Following the success of his first hit, Lewis recorded a string of classic songs such as “Great Balls of Fire,” “Breathless,” and “High School Confidential.” He quickly became known for his energetic and unpredictable stage performances, solidifying his status as a rock & roll pioneer.
Lewis’s career faced a major setback in 1958 when he married his 13-year-old cousin, Myra Gale Brown. The resulting scandal led to boycotts and bans from radio stations and venues, causing a significant decline in his popularity.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lewis successfully reinvented himself as a country artist, achieving a comeback with several hit songs. His transition to country music helped revive his career, and he continued to release music into the following decades.
Lewis’s career saw another resurgence in the late 1980s with the release of his solo album *Mystery Girl,* which marked a major comeback. His last album, *Rock & Roll Time*, was released in 2014, showcasing his enduring influence on music.
Jerry Lee Lewis passed away in 2022 at the age of 87. Known as one of the original pioneers of rock & roll, his distinctive piano playing and dynamic performances left a lasting legacy in the world of music.
