Jerry Lewis was a born entertainer who was destined for the stage. He was the king of comedy and compassion.
Born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey. He was the son of Russian Jewish vaudevillians and grew up surrounded by the rhythms of performance, laughter, and show business.
By the age of five, he was already entertaining audiences, foreshadowing a career that would make him one of the most beloved comedians in history.
In 1945, fate brought Lewis together with Dean Martin, a suave crooner with effortless charm. The two formed the comedy duo Martin and Lewis, a pairing that would redefine entertainment. Their chemistry was electric—Martin played the straight man while Lewis’s slapstick antics sent audiences into fits of laughter. They conquered nightclubs, radio, and television before making their film debut in My Friend Irma (1949). For a decade, they reigned as Hollywood’s top comedy team, but in 1956, creative differences led to a dramatic split, leaving fans heartbroken.
Though the breakup could have derailed his career, Lewis proved he was more than just half of a duo. As a solo artist, he pushed the boundaries of comedy, starring in and directing a string of innovative films. The Bellboy (1960) introduced a new kind of silent comedy, The Nutty Professor (1963) became a cultural phenomenon, and The King of Comedy (1982) saw him take on a darker, more dramatic role. His influence extended beyond the screen—his pioneering use of video playback revolutionized the film industry.
Beyond the laughter, Lewis had an equally powerful legacy as a humanitarian. For over 60 years, he dedicated himself to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, hosting the annual Labor Day Telethon that raised billions for research and treatment. His tireless work earned him numerous accolades, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Despite his larger-than-life persona, Lewis was a man of many dimensions. He was a talented singer, a meticulous filmmaker, and an outspoken figure in Hollywood. Known for his perfectionism, he expected the best from himself and those around him. Though his career had its ups and downs, his impact on comedy was undeniable.
Amidst having an excellent career as an entertainer, Lewis was terrible at being a family man.
Lewis was a bad husband and a bad father. He was married to Patti Palmer in 1944. The marriage was an interfaith marriage (Lewis was a Jewish while his wife was a Catholic).
While the marriage lasted, Lewis and his wife had six sons but he was never faithful or committed to his wife and children.
Lewis was a reckless man who openly had relationships with other women outside of his marriage. To make matters worse, he granted an unapologetic interview admitting his infidelity.
At some point in 1980, Lewis’s wife filed for a divorce on the basis of his excessive spending and infidelity. The divorce process was finalized in 1983.
It was also rumored that Lewis could be father of Lynn Dixon Kleinman’s daughter while he was still married to his first wife.
Later on in 1983, Lewis married his second wife, Sandra “SanDee” Pitnick and they adopted a daughter born in 1992.
Unfortunately, maybe out of spite, Lewis did not leave any inheritance to his children and grandchildren from Palmer.
Jerry Lewis passed away on August 20, 2017, at the age of 91, leaving behind an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. His films continue to inspire comedians, his innovations shape filmmaking, and his philanthropic efforts live on in the lives he touched. More than just a comedian, Lewis was a pioneer, a visionary, and above all, a man who dedicated his life to making people laugh—and making a difference.
