Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest baseball players of all time who is best known for his impressive 56-game hitting streak, a record that still stands to this day.
DiMaggio spent his entire career playing for the New York Yankees. DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914 in Martinez, California, to Italian immigrants who later became naturalized citizens.
He was the eighth child of immigrants Giuseppe and Rosalia DiMaggio, from Isola delle Femmine. DiMaggio spent his childhood playing baseball with his siblings. He quit school and worked odd jobs and played baseball semi-professionally.
DiMaggio signed with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1932. After making his major league debut in 1936, it didn’t take long to establish himself as a star outfielder and hitter.
DiMaggio helped the Yankees win nine World Series championships and 10 American League pennants. He won many accolades throughout his career, which include two batting titles, two home run titles, and two RBI titles.
DiMaggio’s promising career was interrupted due to his services in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He resumed playing in 1946 but failed to replicate his past successes. He retired from the sport after the 1951 season at the age of 37.
He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, his first year of eligibility.
DiMaggio was married to Actress Dorothy Arnold in 1939. The couple had a son, but the marriage didn’t last because Arnold wanted DiMaggio to settle down and be a father to their son and a nearby husband to her, but he was more interested in the public eye.
The marriage finally ended in 1944. DiMaggio dated and married Actress Marilyn Monroe. The relationship/marriage was troubled with rumors of jealousy and physical abuse. The marriage only lasted for nine months before they finally divorced.
DiMaggio passed away due to lung cancer in 1999 at the age of 84.
