John F. Kennedy Jr. was born on November 25, 1960, in Washington, D.C., to President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. He was the third child and only son of the couple.
In 1963, when John Jr. was just two years old, his father was assassinated while serving as President of the United States. Following the assassination, John Jr.’s mother moved the family to New York City, where he spent much of his childhood.
John F. Kennedy Jr. attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, before going on to study at Brown University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1983. After college, he attended law school at New York University, where he earned his law degree in 1989.
Following his graduation from law school, John Jr. worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office for several years. In 1995, he founded the political magazine *George*, which aimed to bring a fresh perspective to political journalism. The magazine was initially successful but struggled financially and ceased publication in 2001.
Throughout his life, John F. Kennedy Jr. was an accomplished athlete and enjoyed playing sports. He was particularly passionate about flying and earned his pilot’s license in 1998. He often flew his own plane to visit family and friends and frequently used it for business travel.
In 1996, John Jr. married Carolyn Bessette, a publicist for Calvin Klein. The couple had a private wedding ceremony on Cumberland Island, off the coast of Georgia.
