John Madden was a former American football coach, broadcaster, and video game personality who is widely recognized for his contributions as a color commentator for NFL games on various networks such as CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC. Additionally, he made significant contributions to the Madden NFL video game series by lending his name and voice.
Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota but grew up in Daly City, California. During his time at Jefferson High School in Daly City, he played football. He further pursued his passion for the sport by attending college at the College of San Mateo and later at the University of Oregon, where he honed his skills as a lineman. In 1958, John was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but sadly suffered a knee injury that abruptly ended his playing career before it could even take off.
Beginning in 1960, John Madden embarked on an impressive coaching journey starting out as an assistant coach at Hancock College before moving on to San Diego State University, where he worked under Don Coryell from 1964 to 1966. Following that, John joined the Oakland Raiders organization in 1967, assuming the role of linebackers coach. His dedication led him to be promoted quickly within their ranks, eventually taking over as head coach in 1969, making him one of AFL’s youngest-ever head coaches at just thirty-two years old.
Madden’s tenure with the Oakland Raiders spanned ten seasons, yielding remarkable results with a record of 103–32–7, along with seven division titles and one Super Bowl championship win. An extraordinary feat worth mentioning is that throughout Madden’s coaching career, he never experienced a single losing season, which solidifies him as one of the greatest coaches ever. Furthermore, boasting an impressive winning percentage (.750), John Madden still holds the highest winning percentage among coaches who have coached more than a hundred games.
Due to health issues, Madden decided to retire from coaching in 1979. In the same year, he made a career transition and joined CBS as a color analyst, where he gained immense popularity and influence in sports media. He was known for his infectious enthusiasm, sense of humor, and innovative use of the telestrator, revolutionizing football commentary.
Madden also ventured into the video game industry in 1988 by endorsing a football game developed by Electronic Arts. This collaboration led to the creation of “John Madden Football,” which turned out to be an enormous success and resulted in a franchise that has sold more than 250 million copies worldwide, becoming a cultural phenomenon in gaming.
Sadly, John Madden passed away at the age of 85 in 2021. His influence on football, both as a coach and a broadcaster, and his lasting impact through the Madden NFL video game series, cement his legacy as one of the most iconic figures in sports history.
