He not only won five Olympic gold medals but also set an impressive 67 world records in swimming. However, Weissmuller is most famous for his portrayal of Tarzan in 12 films released between 1932 and 1948.
Johnny Weissmuller was born Johann Peter Weißmüller, on June 2, 1904, in Szabadfalva, in the Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now part of Romania, and called Freidorf) (Timișoara).
Weissmuller was born into an ethnically Banat Swabian family. He was also the sixth generation of Weißmüller born in Hungary.
Weissmuller immigrated to the United States with his family at the tender age of seven months. They first lived in Windber, Pennsylvania, to live with family before they moved to Chicago three years after.
In Chicago, they lived in a single level in a shared house his parents rented.
Growing up in Chicago, Weissmuller honed his swimming skills at a local YMCA. It was there that he discovered his passion and talent for the sport.
He competed in his first Olympics in Paris, where he achieved remarkable success, securing three gold medals in freestyle events and a bronze medal in water polo.
Weissmuller’s triumph continued in the 1928 Olympics held in Amsterdam, where he added two more gold medals to his impressive collection.
Weissmuller’s swimming career came to an end in 1931 when he signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to star as Tarzan.
Making his debut in “Tarzan the Ape Man” in 1932 alongside Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane, Weissmuller’s performance captivated audiences worldwide.
The film’s immense popularity led to the creation of 11 sequels, solidifying Weissmuller’s status as one of the most beloved stars of the 1930s and 1940s. He also appeared in other films such as “Jungle Jim”, a series of adventure movies based on a popular comic strip.
In addition to his successful career, Weissmuller had a colorful personal life. He married five times and had three children.
Unfortunately, he faced various health issues later in life, including a stroke and heart problems. He died in 1984 at the age of 79 in Acapulco, Mexico.
