Born on October 9, 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, Joseph B. Friedman was an American inventor whose creative mind would change the way we drink beverages forever. As the fifth of eight children born to Jewish-American immigrants, Friedman grew up in a household that valued hard work and innovation.
From a young age, Joseph showed a knack for problem-solving and invention. At just 14 years old, Joseph Friedman came up with his first invention – the “pencilite,” a lighted pencil for writing in the dark. This early creation laid the foundation for a lifetime of creative thinking. In the 1920s, he pursued studies in real estate and optometry.

A Career of Innovation

Friedman’s professional life was as flexible as his most famous invention. He worked as a realtor in San Francisco and occasionally practiced optometry to make ends meet. His creative mind was always at work, leading to a wide range of inventions from fountain pen improvements to engine enhancements.

The Birth of the Flexible Straw

In 1937, at his brother’s ice cream parlor in San Francisco, Friedman saw his daughter Judith having trouble drinking a milkshake with a paper straw. This common challenge inspired an innovative idea for sipping drinks.

Joseph Friedman went home and began experimenting. He inserted a screw into a paper straw, wrapped dental floss around the screw’s threads to create ridges, and then removed the screw. The result was a straw with a flexible neck that could bend without collapsing. On September 28, 1937, Friedman was granted U.S. patent #2,094,268 for his “Drinking Tube,” marking the birth of the flexible straw.

Challenges and Triumphs

Bringing his invention to market wasn’t easy. Joseph Friedman initially tried to sell his patent to existing straw manufacturers but faced rejection. Without being discouraged, he opted to make the straws himself. With financial backing from family members and associates, Friedman established the Flexible Straw Corporation in 1939.

Friedman’s progress was briefly interrupted by World War II, but he kept going. By the late 1940s, he had finalized the first machine for manufacturing flexible straws. The first flexible straws were sold in 1947 to a hospital, which promptly realized how the bendy straw could assist bedridden patients in drinking more easily.

Family and Business

Friedman’s sister, Betty, played a crucial role in the success of the Flexible Straw Corporation. She managed sales and distribution, helping to expand the market focus from hospitals to homes and children. In 1950, the company moved to Santa Monica, California, and was renamed Flex-Straw Co.
