Kate Spade was an American fashion designer and entrepreneur who founded the designer brand Kate Spade New York. Spade was born in Kansas City and graduated from Arizona State University in 1985 with a degree in journalism. She worked as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine in New York City.
Kate and her husband Andy Spade together launched Kate Spade New York in 1993 which featured a rich line of handbags that became a global phenomenon. The brand soon expanded to include clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc.
Spade sold her stake in the company in 2006 to focus on her family. She and her husband launched a new fashion brand called Frances Valentine.
Spade was known for the colorful and playful designs that combined sophistication with whimsy. She was influenced by her mother’s chic style and her travels around the world.
Kate spent her final days in New York City, struggling with depression and anxiety. On June 5, 2018, at the age of 55, she was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment. A housekeeper discovered Spade hanging from a red scarf tied to a doorknob in her bedroom. The New York City Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death as suicide by hanging.
Spade left behind a powerful legacy in the fashion industry. She revolutionized handbag design in the 1990s with her sleek, colorful, and functional creations. Her brand, Kate Spade New York, grew from a small line of handbags to a global fashion empire encompassing accessories, clothing, and home goods. Spade’s designs brought a sense of fun and whimsy to fashion, inspiring a generation of women. Her impact extended beyond her products, as she became a role model for female entrepreneurs.
Despite her untimely death, Kate Spade’s influence continues to be felt in the fashion world. Her brand, though no longer under her direct control, still bears her name and carries on her vision of stylish, joyful design. Spade’s legacy serves as a reminder of both her creative genius and the importance of mental health awareness, even among those who seem to have it all.
