At the age of 11, Smith’s family moved to Timaru, in the South Island, where he attended Timaru Boys’ High School. During his high school years, Smith became involved in drama and rock bands, setting the foundation for his future career in entertainment.

In the mid-1980s, Smith started his career with musical endeavors, including involvement in New Zealand’s lo-fi music scene.
