Lata Mangeshkar is one of the most respected and popular singers in Indian cinema. She enjoyed a highly successful career spanning several decades, during which she recorded over 1,000 songs.
Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She was introduced to music by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar, a renowned stage actor and musician. She began singing at the age of five and made her debut in the Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal.”
After her father’s death in 1942, Lata pursued singing to support her family. In 1945, she moved to Bombay and gained recognition with the song “Uthaye ja unke sitam” from the film *Andaz* (1949). Her major breakthrough came with the hit song “Aayega Aanewaala” from the film *Mahal.*
Lata Mangeshkar sang in several regional languages, including Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, and Kannada. She is known for her powerful rendition of “Ae mere watan ke logo,” which deeply moved Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She was also a supporter of the Indian Army, releasing songs like “Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki” as tributes.
Throughout her career, Lata recorded around 30,000 songs in 14 languages. She received numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2001.
In January 2022, Lata Mangeshkar tested positive for Covid-19 and passed away in February due to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Her legacy as one of India’s greatest playback singers remains unmatched.
