Lynn Ban was born on May 27, 1972, in Singapore, to a family deeply rooted in business and fashion. Her father, David Ban, was a successful real estate magnate and entrepreneur, while her mother, Patricia, was a certified gemologist. Lynn’s childhood involved many moves between Singapore, New York, and Hong Kong because of her father’s job.
Despite the constant changes in her environment, Lynn’s passion for art and fashion remained constant. With great passion, she studied art history and literature at New York University’s Gallatin School. A thirst for knowledge brought her to Cornell University to study French literature and art history. During her studies, Lynn also spent two years at the Sorbonne University in Paris.
Lynn’s life took a romantic turn at a New Year’s Eve party in 1994 when she met Jett Kain. Kain, who had been an MTV producer and reporter, later became her husband and business partner. Sebastian, their son, was raised by them and became the most important person in their lives. Lynn’s professional and family lives thrived equally; her son frequently joined her on her creative adventures.
New York’s Genki Sushi franchise was the beginning of Lynn’s career in fashion. She discovered her real passion in 2011 when she started her own jewelry brand, Lynn Ban Jewelry. Her unconventional and striking designs immediately appealed to both celebrities and fashion fans. Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga weren’t just clients, they became advocates for her work. Ban’s jewelry stood out for its edgy, rock-and-roll style, frequently incorporating armor, bullets, and thorns. In the competitive world of high-end jewelry design, her unique fusion of rebellion and luxury set her apart. Working with big brands and being in prestigious fashion magazines established her as a visionary in the field.
Lynn Ban’s influence reached further than just jewelry design. In 2023, she became a cast member of Netflix’s reality show “Bling Empire: New York,” which showcased the lives of wealthy Asian Americans in New York City. This platform gave her a global audience for her unique perspective on fashion, culture, and entrepreneurship. Lynn maintained strong ties to her Singaporean heritage while enjoying New York’s global culture throughout her career. A new generation of designers found inspiration in her culturally diverse, boundary-pushing jewelry creations.
Sadly, Lynn Ban passed away on January 20, 2025, at 52 years old. She died from complications of brain surgery after a Christmas Eve 2024 skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado. The fashion and entertainment industries were shocked by the announcement of her death from her son Sebastian. Lynn Ban’s enduring legacy is defined by her groundbreaking designs, her influence on the fashion industry, and the motivation she gave to aspiring designers and entrepreneurs. Her rise from Singapore to New York’s fashion elite showcases her creativity, resilience, and unwavering passion.
