Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who was one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement. He advocated for racial equality and campaigned against segregation in the United States.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta to Michael King Sr. and Alberta King. King grew up in the city’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, which happened to be home to some of the most prominent and prosperous African Americans in the country. His name was later changed by his father to Martin Luther in honor of the German reformer Martin Luther.
King’s childhood was filled with racism and discrimination. He was once asked to give up his seat on a bus to a white person when he was 14.
King started his educational journey at Morehouse College, where he went for high school. But before Morehouse College, King attended segregated public schools as a gifted student. He enrolled at Boston University, where he earned a Ph.D. in systematic theology in 1955.
King gained prominence in 1955 when he led the Montgomery bus boycott, a campaign to end racial segregation on public transportation. The boycott lasted for 385 days and resulted in the Supreme Court declaring bus segregation unconstitutional. During the boycott, King faced harassment and threats from white supremacists but maintained his stance on nonviolence.
King became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization aimed at coordinating and supporting civil rights movements across the South.
King also spoke out against war, capitalism, imperialism, and weapons. He advocated for workers’ rights and labor unions.
When King was in Memphis in 1968 to support a strike by sanitation workers, he was shot by James Earl Ray on the balcony of his room at the Lorraine Motel. He was pronounced dead later that day. His death sparked riots and unrest across the country and around the world.
He married Coretta Scott in 1953 and had four children: Yolanda King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Bernice King.
He became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1954.
King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. His legacy as a leader of social justice and equality endures to this day.
