Matthew Langford Perry was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He possessed dual American and Canadian citizenship because of his parents’ backgrounds. Perry’s father, John Bennett Perry, was an American actor and model, while his mother, Suzanne Marie Morrison, was a Canadian journalist and former press secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Perry’s parents divorced when he was just an infant. His mother remarried Keith Morrison, a Canadian broadcast journalist, and Perry was primarily raised in Ottawa, Ontario. Growing up, he had four younger maternal half-siblings and one younger paternal half-sister.
As a child, Perry attended Rockcliffe Park Public School and later Ashbury College in Ottawa. Interestingly, he was a classmate of future Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Perry excelled in tennis during his youth, earning a national ranking in Canada.
At the age of 15, Perry moved to Los Angeles to live with his father and pursue acting. He attended The Buckley School, where he discovered his passion for acting and comedy. Perry graduated from Buckley in 1987.
Perry’s acting career began with small roles in TV series like “240-Robert” and “Charles in Charge”. His big break came in 1994 when he landed the role of Chandler Bing on “Friends”. This role launched him into international stardom and became his career-defining role.
During and after “Friends,” Perry appeared in several films and TV shows. He received Emmy nominations for his performances in “The West Wing” and “The Ron Clark Story.” Some of his notable film roles include “Fools Rush In,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” and “17 Again”
Perry never married, though he was briefly engaged to literary manager Molly Hurwitz from 2020 to 2021. Perry faced a lifelong struggle with alcohol and prescription drug addiction. He used his experiences to raise awareness about addiction and recovery.
Perry openly discussed his addiction struggles and recovery journey in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”. According to his calculations, he had invested approximately $9 million in his journey towards sobriety.
Perry’s performance as Chandler Bing on “Friends” made a lasting impression on popular culture. Chandler’s perfect comedic timing and delivery made him one of TV’s most adored characters ever. In addition to his acting career, Perry used his platform to advocate for addiction awareness and recovery, giving a voice to those who are dealing with similar issues.
Tragically, Matthew Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 54 years old. The cause of death was later revealed to be the acute effects of ketamine.
