Matthew Webb was a British swimmer who became the first person to swim across the English Channel in 1875. He was also a pioneer of long-distance swimming and a celebrity in his time.
Matthew Webb was born on 19 January 1848 in Dawley, Shropshire. Webb was among the 13 children of Surgeon Matthew Webb. In 1856, Webb’s family moved to Coalbrookdale, where they lived near the River Severn. And that’s where he had his first memory of water. At seven, Webb already knew how to swim and he was able to save his younger brother, Charles, at eight.
Webb learned to swim in the River Severn and joined the merchant navy at the age of 12. He became a captain in 1870 and gained fame for his heroic rescue of a sailor who fell overboard in the Atlantic Ocean. He received the Stanhope Medal and a £100 prize for his bravery.
Webb was inspired to swim across the English Channel by the failed attempt of J.B. Johnson. He trained for the challenge by swimming in the Thames and the English Channel. He covered his body with porpoise oil to protect against the cold water.
Webb made his first attempt to cross the Channel on 12 August 1875, but he was forced to abandon it due to strong winds and waves. He made his second and successful attempt on 24 August 1875, starting from Dover and landing near Calais. He swam for 21 hours and 40 minutes, covering a distance of about 40 miles (66 km). He became an instant hero among the people.
Webb gave up his naval career to become a professional swimmer and participated in several swimming competitions and races around the world.
Webb’s career as a professional swimmer ended tragically when he attempted to swim across the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls in 1883. He entered the water on 24 July 1883, but he was soon swept away by the powerful currents and drowned. His body was recovered later and buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls. He was 35 years old.
