Meat Loaf was an American singer and actor. He was popularly known for his album “Bat Out of Hell”. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, Loaf was one of the most successful artists in Rock history.
Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday in Dallas, Texas, on September 27, 1947. He was the son of Wilma Artie (née Hukel), a schoolteacher and member of the Vo-di-o-do Girls gospel music quartet, and Orvis Wesley Aday, a former police officer.
He acquired the name “Meat Loaf” due to his weight from his seventh-grade classmates. As a child, Loaf would often accompany his mother in driving to the bars in Dallas to look for his father, who turned into a drunk after he was discharged from the U.S. Army during World War II due to his injuries.
He also grew up attending church, especially Bible study every Sunday. Loaf’s childhood was marked by abuse, poverty, and health problems. He recalled his father lunged at him with a knife after falsely accusing the teen of having girls in his bedroom.
Loaf attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he appeared in school stage productions. He briefly attended Lubbock Christian College and later transferred to North Texas State University.
Loaf’s passion for music and theater caused him to join several bands in his teens and twenties. After Meat Loaf met Jim Steinman in 1973, they created Bat Out of Hell, a rock opera album. The album was a commercial success and sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
Meat Loaf went on to release several more albums but none of them were able to reach the levels of success as Bat Out of Hell. His reunion with Steinman in 1993 resulted in Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell which was another commercial success.
He followed it with Bat Out of Hell II: The Monster Is Loose which was the final album in the trilogy.
Meat Loaf continued to tour and record albums in the 2000s and 2010s despite suffering from various health issues.
Meat Loaf was married to Leslie G. Edmondson, in 1979. He adopted Leslie’s daughter from a previous marriage. In 1981, they had a daughter together.
Meat Loaf passed away in 2022 at the age of 74.
