Michael Hutchence was one of the most popular and influential singers in Australia who also founded the rock band INXS. He stood out from the other singers of the region due to his charismatic stage presence, distinctive voice, and sensual lyrics.
Michael Hutchence was born in the Crows Nest suburb of Sydney on 22 January 1960. He was the son of make-up artist Patricia Glassop and businessman Kelland Frank “Kell” Hutchence.
Following his father’s interest, Hutchence’s family relocated to Brisbane. But they shortly left Australia for Hong Kong.
Hutchence spent most of his childhood in Hong Kong. During their early days in Hong Kong, Hutchence and his brother attended Glenealy Junior School and Beacon Hill School.
Growing up, Hutchence demonstrated keen interest in swimming but he badly broke his arms. After the incident, he started showing interest in poetry and performed his first song in a local toy store commercial.
Hutchence also attended King George V School while in Hong Kong but his family relocated back to Sydney after buying a house in Belrose.
Hutchence returned to Sydney in 1972. He and his schoolmates formed a band called the Farriss Brothers which included Andrew Farriss, Tim Farriss, Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, and Garry Gary Beers. The band later changed its name to INXS in 1979 and released their debut album in 1980.
Hutchence was the main songwriter and lyricist for the band and he collaborated with Andrew Farriss on most of their songs. INXS reached superstardom status in the mid-1980s after releasing some of their most popular albums.
They had finally become a household name and were one of the most popular bands in the world.
Hutchence’s life was always in the limelight. He engaged in relationships with several women including Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen, and Paula Yates.
He suffered a head injury in 1992 when he had an altercation with a taxi driver in Copenhagen. This affected his sense of smell and taste. Depression and drugs soon took over his personal life.
In 1997, the tragic news of Hutchence’s death broke out in traditional media. He was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney.
The coroner ruled that he had committed suicide while depressed and under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
