Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, near Chicago. He was the eighth of ten children in the Jackson family. Both of his parents, Joseph Walter “Joe” Jackson and Katherine Esther Jackson, had a talent for music. Joe, previously a boxer and employee at a steel mill, performed as a guitarist in a local R&B band. Katherine, his mother, was a devout Jehovah’s Witness who played the piano and aspired to be a country singer.
Michael and his siblings were exposed to music from a young age. Recognizing his children’s talent, Joe Jackson created a family band named the Jackson Brothers, which included Michael’s older brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine. Michael and his brother Marlon joined the group as backup musicians in 1964. The band was later renamed the Jackson 5.
Michael Jackson’s education was unconventional because of his early entry into show business at the age of five. The demands of rehearsals, performances and the growing fame of the Jackson 5, made it impossible for him to continue attending public grammar school in Gary. His family relocated to Los Angeles in 1969 after signing with Motown Records. Michael continued his education with the help of private tutors, eventually earning his diploma from Montclair College Preparatory School.
Michael Jackson’s professional career began at the tender age when he joined the Jackson 5 as a backup musician. When he was only eight, he was sharing lead vocals with his brother Jermaine. The group had their first major success in 1969 with their debut single “I Want You Back,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The groups place in pop music history was solidified with subsequent hits like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.”
Michael commenced his solo career in 1971, while still being part of the Jackson 5. His early solo hits included “Got to Be There” and “Ben,” the latter becoming his first solo number-one single. However, it was his 1979 album Off the Wall that marked his breakthrough as a solo artist. Quincy Jones produced the album, which included popular songs such as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You,” and sold more than 20 million copies globally.
Michael became a global superstar with the release of Thriller (1982). It became the best-selling album of all time, with over 66 million copies sold worldwide. By featuring groundbreaking music videos like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the 13-minute horror-themed “Thriller,” the album revolutionized the music video industry and played a crucial role in breaking down racial barriers on MTV.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Michael released successful albums like Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995). In addition, he went on numerous global tours, entertaining millions of fans worldwide. Countless artists were influenced by his innovative dance moves, like the moonwalk. His unique vocal style, had a lasting impact on popular culture.
Michael Jackson’s personal life was often as publicized as his professional achievements. He had two marriages: one with Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis Presley’s daughter, from 1994 to 1996, and another with Debbie Rowe from 1996 to 2000. With Rowe, he had two children, Michael Joseph “Prince” Jackson Jr. and Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson. Later on, he became a father to a third child named Prince Michael “Blanket” Jackson II, using a surrogate.
Michael Jackson’s contributions to music, dance, and fashion have had a lasting impact on popular culture. He is credited with transforming the music video into an art form and a powerful promotional tool. His influence extended beyond music. Jackson used his platform to address social issues and support numerous charities. According to the Guinness World Record, he holds the title for supporting the highest number of charities among pop stars.
Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, in Los Angeles, California. His death was caused by acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication, leading to cardiac arrest. Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson’s personal physician, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for administering the drugs that caused his death.
