Mike Bossy was a former Canadian professional ice hockey player who played for the New York Islanders in the NHL from 1977 to 1987. Bossy was considered a prolific goal scorer who held several NHL records during his time.
Bossy was born on January 22, 1957 in Montreal, Canada. He was the fifth son among ten children. Bossy’s parents were Dorothy, an English and French-Canadian, and his father Borden, who maintained a backyard ice rink at their apartment building, was Ukrainian.
At the age of 12, Bossy broke a kneecap while competing in long jump at school. In his later years, he developed chronic knee problems during his hockey career.
Bossy’s love for hockey started at his youth and he eventually built his career around it. Bossy attended St. Pius X Comprehensive High School and then Laval Catholic High School.
Bossy got into hockey at the age of six and joined the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League at the age of 15. Even in the QMJHL, he was a star player and a prolific goal scorer.
He scored a whopping 309 goals and 392 assists in just 264 games. He was the 15th overall draft pick by the New York Islanders in the 1977 NHL Entry Draft.
Bossy made his presence felt in his rookie season scoring 53 goals and 38 assists in 73 games. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year and helped the Islanders reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time in franchise history. Clearly, the best is yet to come for Bossy.
He continued to dominate the league the coming years and formed a lethal offensive trio with Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies known as “Trio Grande”. He led the league in goals five times and won four consecutive Stanley Cups with the Islanders from 1980 to 1983.
Bossy’s promising career was cut short by chronic back injuries that forced him into retirement at the age of 30 after playing 10 seasons with the NHL. He finished his impressive career with 573 goals and 553 assists in 752 games.
Away from hockey, Bossy was a devoted family man. Bossy married his wife, Lucie Creamer, in 1977. He met his future wife when he was 14. They had two children.
Bossy sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 65.
