Paul Mooney was an American comedian, writer, and actor who performed stand-up comedy and was also known for his collaboration with many famous comedians such as Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Dave Chappelle. He also worked as a writer for several television shows.
Mooney was born Paul Gladney in 1941 in Louisiana but later moved to Oakland, California when he was seven years old. He was the son of George Gladney and LaVoya Ealy but growing up Mooney was raised primarily by his grandmother. Gladney coined the nickname “Mooney” after the original Scarface (1932) actor Paul Muni (which itself was the actor’s stage name).
Mooney began his career working with the Gatti-Charles Circus as a rainmaster which gave him the opportunity to hone his comedy skills and jokes.
Mooney got his big break when he was hired to become a writer for Richard Pryor who is arguably one of the greatest comedians of all time. Mooney wrote Pryor’s routines for his Saturday Night Live appearances, his albums, and his movies.
Mooney was known for his provocative humor that wasn’t afraid to tackle controversial topics like racism, politics, and culture.
He sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 79.
