Percy Lavon Julian, an African-American chemist born in 1899, greatly contributed to the fields of organic chemistry, biochemistry, and medicine. He is most renowned for his groundbreaking work in synthesizing physostigmine, a medication utilized in the treatment of glaucoma. Additionally, Julian played a pivotal role in the large-scale production of synthetic cortisone, a hormone known for its ability to alleviate inflammation and pain. Moreover, he developed an innovative process for creating synthetic progesterone, a vital female sex hormone, from soybean oil.
Throughout his life, Julian encountered numerous challenges and obstacles stemming from racial discrimination. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, to parents who had once been enslaved, he faced segregation in schools and limited opportunities for higher education. Despite these setbacks, he successfully earned a degree in chemistry from DePauw University in Indiana. However, when he pursued his master’s degree at Harvard University, Julian was unable to complete his Ph.D. due to the inability to fulfill his teaching assistantship requirements.
Percy Lavon Julian relocated to Vienna, Austria, and successfully completed his Ph.D. program at the University of Vienna in 1931. Upon returning to the United States, he joined the Glidden Company, a well-known paints and varnishes manufacturer, as a research director.
During his time at Glidden, Julian made a breakthrough by uncovering the chemical composition of physostigmine and subsequently synthesized it from plant sources. Additionally, he devised a technique for extracting soy protein, which found applications in the production of paints, plastics, paper, and even food.
Eventually, Julian decided to part ways with Glidden and went on to establish his own venture called Julian Laboratories. At his new company, he focused on enhancing the manufacturing process of synthetic cortisone and progesterone derived from soybean oil. His efforts paid off when he sold Julian Laboratories in 1961 for a staggering $2.3 million.
Despite facing adversity, Julian’s determination and intellect led him to become a trailblazer in the chemical industry and one of the first African-American millionaires in the United States. His invaluable contributions to science and medicine continue to inspire generations of aspiring chemists and researchers.
Unfortunately, Julian’s life came to an end in 1975 at the age of 76. Despite his passing, his contributions in the field of chemistry and industrial development continue to be remembered and appreciated to this day.
