Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother served as the wife of King George VI and the mother of both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. She held the title of the last Empress of India and also became the first Queen consort to witness her daughter ascending to the throne. Elizabeth was born into a noble family, being the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Growing up, Elizabeth spent most of her time at St Paul's Walden and at Glamis Castle, the Earl's ancestral home in Scotland.
Elizabeth was also homeschooled by a governess until the age of eight. As a child, she was fond of field sports, ponies and dogs. She eventually started school in London. While at school, her best subjects were literature and scripture. Elizabeth later returned to a private education under a German Jewish governess, Käthe Kübler, she passed the Oxford Local Examination with distinction at age thirteen.
In 1923, she entered into marriage with Prince Albert, Duke of York, who was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary.
Two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, were born out of their union. Their lives were relatively peaceful until Albert unexpectedly became king in 1936 following the abdication of his elder brother Edward VIII.
During the challenging years of his reign, especially throughout the Second World War, Elizabeth stood by her husband's side, sharing his burdens.
Notably, they remained in London during the Blitz, showing support to the troops and visiting factories.
Elizabeth was admired for her warm and amiable personality, as well as her sense of humor and style.
Following the passing of her husband in 1952, she adopted the title Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to avoid any confusion with her daughter.
Remaining an active and beloved member of the royal family, she continued to fulfill public engagements and embarked on extensive travels.
She was especially close to her grandchildren, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, and later to Prince William and Prince Harry.
She died at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, on 30 March 2002, at the age of 101.
