Ranbir Raj Kapoor, also known as Raj Kapoor, was a legendary Indian actor, film director, and producer who is known as one of the pioneers of the Hindi film industry. He is considered the most influential filmmaker and actor, famously referred to as The Greatest Showman of Indian Cinema.
Raj Kapoor was originally born Shrishti Nath Kapoor on December 14, 1924, in Peshawar, British India (now Pakistan). He was born into a prominent Punjabi family known as the Kapoor clan to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi Kapoor. He was the eldest among the six siblings in his family, and his brothers were late actors. Kapoor’s family moved from Peshawar to Bombay for education and residence. Due to the constant moving, Kapoor attended various schools like Colonel Brown Cambridge School in Dehradun, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Calcutta, and Campion School in Bombay. Kapoor came from a distinguished family with a rich and diverse legacy in the Indian film industry.
He started his career at the age of ten when he appeared in a Hindi film in 1935’s Inquilab. Later, he had his breakthrough role in 1947 in a movie called Neel Kamal. At the age of 24, he established his own film studio called R.K. Films, which gained him significance as a filmmaker. He was the youngest film director of his time.
Some of his notable works as an actor and producer under his banner include Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), and Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960). Apart from his productions, he acted in notable movies including Dastan (1950), Anhonee (1952), Chori Chori (1956), and many more. He also produced well-known social films like Boot Polish and Ab Dilli Door Nahin.
In 1954, he produced and starred in a romantic musical called Sangam. This was also his first movie in color. In 1970, he released his most ambitious work, Mera Naam Joker, which took him six years to complete but was initially a complete disaster as it gained no recognition. Later, the movie caught the public eye and was considered a cult classic.
In the late 1970s, he began to give importance to films of female protagonists such as Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Prem Rog (1982), and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). Raj Kapoor had a successful career lasting several decades. He was often referred to as the “Charlie Chaplin of India” for his portrayals of vagrant characters.
Throughout his career, Kapoor received many awards, including three National Film Awards and 11 Filmfare Awards, along with multiple nominations. In 1971, the government honored him with the Padma Bhushan. He was also awarded “Best Director of the Millennium” by the Stardust Awards.
Raj Kapoor passed away on June 2, 1988, at the age of 63 due to complications related to asthma, a disease he had been suffering from for a long time. He was one of the most influential figures in the Hindi film industry. His work is still remembered by fans around the world.
