Rajivaratna Gandhi was an Indian politician who served as the 6th Prime Minister of India after his mother’s assassination from 1984 to 1989. He was born on August 20, 1944, in Mumbai, India. He was the youngest Indian Prime Minister who was appointed as the Prime Minister of India by the Indian National Congress at the age of 40. Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi the former Prime Minister of India. His father Feroze Gandhi, was an Indian freedom fighter, journalist, and politician.
Rajiv Gandhi grew up in a political and highly influential family and was surrounded by prominent figures of the freedom struggle during his childhood. Rajiv Gandhi attended various schools in different parts of India during his early years. He attended Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, which is one of India’s most prestigious boarding schools made for academic excellence and character development. After completing his schooling in India, he attended Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. At Cambridge, he completed his course in mechanical engineering and developed a passion for flying, and obtained a private pilot’s license.
His entry into politics was on 23 June 1980 when he lost his brother Sanjay Gandhi, who died in a plane crash. After Indira Gandhi’s assassination, many party leaders turned to Rajiv Gandhi to fill in his mother’s position. Gandhi accepted the demand of the leaders and agreed to enter politics despite reluctance and lack of political experience.
After becoming a member of the Indian National Congress he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1981. On December 31, 1984, the congress party under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi won the general election and Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. During his time in office, he made significant contributions that had a lasting impact on the country. Under his leadership, he made efforts to computerize government offices and reduce bureaucratic red tape.
Rajiv Gandhi pursued economic liberalization and initiated policies to promote foreign investment and trade. He aimed to open up the Indian economy to the global market and encourage private sector participation. Rajiv Gandhi’s time as Prime Minister was bursting with accomplishments and difficulties. His government faced controversies like the Bofors scandal, corruption allegations, and communal issues.
He died on May 21, 1991, when he was assassinated during a political rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, India. The assassination was executed by a suicide bomber associated with the separatist militant organization in Srilanka. His death shocked the nation and the world. It was a devastating event that had a massive impact on Indian politics. A state funeral was organized for Gandhi on 24 May 1991. He is remembered as a prominent leader who made significant contributions to the country during his time as the Prime Minister.
