Ray Kroc was an American businessman who was best known for expanding the McDonald’s franchise from a local restaurant to a global juggernaut. He joined the company as a franchise agent in 1954 and bought the chain from the McDonald brothers in 1961.
Ray Kroc was born on October 5, 1902, in Oak Park, Illinois to Czech-American parents, Rose Mary [née Hrach] and Alois “Louis” Kroc.
Kroc’s father, Alois, was wealthy back in the days. He acquired a fortune speculating on land during the 1920s, only to lose everything with the stock market crash in 1929.
As a means to survive, Kroc lied about his age to become a Red Cross ambulance driver during World War I.
During this period, he did a variety of jobs including a paper-cup salesman, a Florida real estate agent, and a pianist in multiple bands.
Kroc dropped out of high school and worked various jobs throughout his career. On a visit to the McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California, he was impressed by the efficiency and popularity of the restaurant which used the “Speedee Service System” to serve hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes. He convinced them to let him franchise their concept across the country.
Kroc opened his first McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955. He established the McDonald’s corporation and set high standards for quality, service, cleanliness, and value.
By 1960, there were over 200 McDonald’s outlets in the U.S. Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million in 1961, giving him full control of the company. He expanded the business globally and introduced new menu items such as the Big Mac, which became an instant hit among his customers.
Kroc was an avid baseball fan and even purchased the San Diego Padres in 1974 to keep them from relocating. He owned the Padres until his death in 1984.
Kroc was married three times and divorced twice. He had a daughter with his first wife. Kroc died from heart failure in 1984 after suffering from a stroke in 1980.
