Robert Fulton

Early Life

Robert Fulton was an American engineer and inventor who developed the first commercially successful steamboat.

He also designed and built the world’s first practical submarine and the first steam warship.

Robert Fulton was born on a farm in Little Britain, Pennsylvania, on November 14, 1765. He was the son of Robert Fulton Snr and Mary Smith.

Fulton grew up in Pennsylvania where he developed an early interest in mechanics and painting.

Education and Early Career

Fulton shifted to England in 1786 to study under the famous artist Benjamin West and also pursued his passion for engineering.

Invention of the Steamboat

Fulton moved to France in 1800 where he met Robert R. Livingston, who was the U.S. Ambassador to France. Together, they built a small steamboat that successfully navigated the Seine River in 1803.

Fulton returned to America in 1806 and began working on a bigger steamboat that could carry passengers and cargo. He named it Clermont.

Clermont’s Maiden Voyage

In 1807, the Clermont made its maiden voyage from New York to Albany and covered a distance of 280 km in 32 hours. This landmark achievement marked the beginning of the steam board era in America.

Personal Life

Before his marriage, Fulton had a variety of homosexual and polyamorous relationships. Fulton was married to Harriet Livingston in 1808. The marriage was blessed with four children.

Later Contributions

Being a pioneer of inland water transportation, Fulton designed and built several more steamboats for different routes and purposes. Fulton built a prototype submarine, which he demonstrated to Napoleon Bonaparte.

Military Innovations

He was also commissioned by the U.S. government to build a steam-powered warship to defend the New York Harbor against the British during the War of 1812. The warship was named Demologus.

Death

Sadly, Fulton died of pneumonia before he could see it in action.
