Samuel Colt Jr., born on July 19, 1814, was an American inventor, industrialist, and businessman who founded Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and was the second of six children in the Colt family. His father, Christopher Colt, was a successful businessman and farmer, and his mother, Sarah Colt, died due to tuberculosis when Colt was only six years old.
Samuel was interested in machinery and engineering from an early age and was known to be curious and inventive. Colt attended Amherst Academy in Massachusetts when he was 11 and was said to be an inattentive and fidgety student. Despite his academic struggles, he was naturally gifted in machinery and engineering.
After leaving school, Colt began working in his father’s textile factory. Realizing he lacked interest in textiles, he started experimenting with the concept of a revolving cylinder firearm.
Colt invented the revolver in 1836, a firearm with a rotating cylinder that could hold multiple rounds. His first successful design was patented in 1836 at the age of 22.
Colt established Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company in 1855, where he manufactured his firearms in Hartford, Connecticut. Samuel Colt introduced methods to make the revolver in a quicker and cheaper way. His assembly line methods and quality control made the process faster and more reliable.
His firearms gained attention internationally and attracted buyers from foreign continents such as Europe, South America, and Asia.
Samuel Colt’s contributions to the firearms industry played a significant role in American history, from the Western frontier to the Civil War. Colt’s designs and manufacturing tactics had a lasting impact on the industry and shaped the development of modern firearms.
Samuel Colt died due to complications with gout, a form of arthritis that causes severe joint pain, in Hartford on January 10, 1862, at the age of 47. His health had been declining for several years and his death occurred during the American Civil War.
At the time of his death in 1862, his firm had already produced some 450,000 guns in 16 different models. His passing was mourned by many, and his contributions to the firearms industry were widely recognized.
