One of the most successful and enduring works by Harnick and Bock is Fiddler on the Roof, which made its debut in 1964 and had an impressive run of over 3,000 performances on Broadway. This musical was inspired by the stories of Sholem Aleichem and follows the journey of a Jewish family living in Tsarist Russia. It featured beloved songs like “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.” Fiddler on the Roof has been revived multiple times on Broadway and around the world and was adapted into a film in 1971.
In addition to his collaboration with Bock, Sheldon Harnick also worked with other notable composers such as Richard Rodgers, Michel Legrand, and Joe Raposo. Some of his other notable musicals include The Apple Tree, The Rothschilds, Rex, A Wonderful Life, and The Phantom Tollbooth.
Sheldon Harnick’s contributions to the industry were recognized when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
