Steve Irwin was an Australian zookeeper, television personality, conservationist, wildlife educator, and environmentalist. He was popularly known as “The Crocodile Hunter” because of his wildlife documentary series of the same name.
Irwin was born on February 22, 1962, in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. His parents founded the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park in 1970, where Steve learned to handle crocodiles and other reptiles from his father, Bob.
Steve’s fascination with reptiles began during his early years. He caught his first snake at the age of six. By his teenage years, he was assisting in capturing small crocodiles, developing a natural instinct and skill for wildlife management.
Steve’s work capturing problematic crocodiles for the Queensland Government helped him develop effective crocodile capture and management techniques, many of which are widely used today.
After becoming head of the park in 1991, Irwin renamed it Australia Zoo. That same year, he met his future wife, Terri Raines, an American naturalist, at the zoo.
Steve and Terri filmed the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter during their honeymoon. The show became a global hit, airing in over 120 countries. Together, the couple hosted other series, such as The Crocodile Hunter Diaries and Croc Files.
Irwin’s passion for wildlife conservation and education was unparalleled. He founded the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, later renamed Wildlife Warriors, to support projects like wildlife rescue, habitat protection, and research. He participated in campaigns to raise awareness and funds for endangered species, including crocodiles, koalas, and elephants.
Steve Irwin passed away on September 4, 2006, after being pierced in the chest by a stingray while filming the documentary Ocean’s Deadliest at Batt Reef, Queensland.
Irwin was buried at Australia Zoo in a private ceremony attended by family and close friends. His legacy continues to inspire wildlife conservation and education worldwide.
