Steven Paul Jobs, popularly known as Steve Jobs, was an American business magnate and inventor who co-founded and became the CEO of Apple. He was known for revolutionizing personal computing, mobile communication, and digital entertainment. Jobs was also the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar, a member of The Walt Disney Company’s board of directors, and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT.
Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, USA, to Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali. As unmarried college students, they put him up for adoption. Paul and Clara Jobs, a working-class couple from Mountain View, California, adopted Steve when he was just a few days old.
During his early years, Jobs showed great interest in electronics, often working on projects and learning about mechanics in the garage. He attended Homestead High School in Cupertino, California, where he was described as intelligent but often bored by traditional education. Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, in 1972 but dropped out after just one semester due to financial strain.
In 1976, Jobs, along with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, co-founded Apple Computer in the Jobs family garage. Their goal was to create and sell user-friendly computers. The Apple I was introduced as a rudimentary computer kit, followed by the Apple II in 1977, one of the first successful mass-produced personal computers. The Apple II featured color graphics and an accessible user interface.
In 1984, Jobs introduced the Macintosh, which featured a graphical user interface and a mouse, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
In 1985, Jobs left Apple and founded NeXT Inc., aiming to produce high-end computers for education and business. In 1989, the NeXT computer was introduced, showcasing advanced hardware and software technologies, including high-quality graphics. Although it did not achieve widespread success, its software became the foundation for Mac OS X.
Jobs bought the computer graphics division in 1989, which later became Pixar Animation Studios. Under his leadership, Pixar produced successful animated films such as “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” and “The Incredibles.”
In 1996, Apple was struggling financially under Gilbert Amelio’s guidance. Jobs returned as an advisor and played a pivotal role in revitalizing the company in 1997. After significant changes, he became the CEO of Apple and introduced innovative products.
Jobs introduced groundbreaking products such as the iPod and iTunes in 2001, revolutionizing how people listened to music. In 2007, he unveiled the iPhone, which combined a phone, iPod, and internet communicator into a single device, setting new standards for smartphones. He launched the App Store in 2008 and popularized tablet computing with the introduction of the iPad in 2010.
Jobs also conceptualized Apple retail stores, creating a minimal and welcoming environment to showcase products and provide customer support.
Jobs had a complex personality, marked by visionary leadership, perfectionism, and an entrepreneurial mindset. Known for his demanding nature and high standards, these traits were key to his success.
In 2011, Jobs’ health began to deteriorate due to a relapse of a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. He resigned as CEO and passed away on October 5, 2011, at his home in Palo Alto, California.
Jobs’ death marked the end of a remarkable career in technology and design. His innovative contributions continue to influence the fields of personal computing, digital media, and mobile communication.
