Sulli, the late South Korean singer, actress, and model, rose to fame as a member of the girl group f(x). Known for her outspoken nature and progressive stance on various social issues, she paved the way as one of the first K-pop idols to openly criticize the industry’s beauty standards and expectations.
Born in 1994 in Busan, South Korea, Sulli began her acting career as a child artist. In 2005, she joined SM Entertainment as a trainee and later debuted as part of f(x) in 2009.
The group quickly gained popularity for their experimental music style and diverse concepts. With their debut album “Pinocchio”, f(x) quickly rose to fame and became one of the biggest girl groups in the industry.
While enjoying success with f(x), Sulli also faced numerous challenges. In 2014, she took a hiatus from the group due to stress-related issues caused by malicious rumors and online bullying. The pressure to maintain a wholesome image and the constant scrutiny from both the media and the public took a toll on her mental and physical well-being.
Despite the challenges, Sulli remained resilient and determined to pursue her dreams. She ventured into a solo career as both an actress and a singer, starring in several films and releasing her debut solo single, “Goblin”, in 2019. Sulli also became a talk show host on a program called “The Night of Hate Comments”, where she openly discussed her experiences with cyberbullying and hate comments.
She faced constant criticism and harassment from netizens and the media for her personal choices and opinions, making her a controversial figure in the Korean entertainment scene.
Despite the challenges she encountered, Sulli was an advocate for women’s rights and mental health awareness. She fearlessly challenged the conservative norms of society and the oppressive culture within the K-pop industry. Sulli wasn’t afraid to challenge these expectations by speaking her mind and expressing herself freely.
This made Sulli a target for online trolls who criticized her for her personal choices or her romantic relationships, which were often discouraged for K-pop stars by their management.
Tragically, Sulli passed away in 2019 at the young age of 25, with her death being ruled as a suicide.
