Syd Barrett was one of the leaders of Pink Floyd, one of the greatest bands of all time. Syd Barrett was born on January 6, 1946, in Cambridge, England. He was the son of Arthur Max Barrett, a prominent pathologist.
As a child, Barrett would occasionally play the piano but always preferred writing and drawing. At a young age, he started acquiring musical instruments such as the ukulele, banjo, and a Höfner acoustic guitar.
A year after purchasing his Höfner acoustic guitar at 14, Barrett bought his first electric guitar and built his own amplifier. Barrett started using the name “Syd” at 14 but was never allowed to be called that at home.
Barrett attended Cambridgeshire High School for Boys with Waters, one of his future bandmates. He later went to Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, where he also met his future bandmate, David Gilmour.
Barrett showed a keen interest in music from his childhood. He learned to play various instruments but mastered the guitar.
Barrett joined Pink Floyd in 1965 and was the main songwriter and lead singer on their debut album in 1967. The album quickly became a commercial and critical success, helping establish the band as one of the best in the world.
However, Barrett’s experimentation with LSD severely affected his mental health, causing him to become erratic. He suffered from mood swings, memory loss, and paranoia, which created problems between him and the band. Eventually, he was replaced by David Gilmour. Barrett went on to release two solo albums.
After 1972, Barrett withdrew from the music industry and public life. He returned to Cambridge, where he lived a simple life devoted to painting and gardening.
Barrett was never married nor had children, but he enjoyed photography and spending time at the seaside with his sister. During his lifetime, he was involved in numerous relationships and was briefly engaged to Gayla Pinion before his death.
He passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2006 at the age of 60.
