Tupac Shakur, also known as 2Pac, is one of the most influential artists in Hip-Hop history. Tupac was born Lesane Parish Crooks but was later renamed to Tupac Amaru Shakur—after Peruvian revolutionary Tupac Amaru II—when he was just a year old.
Tupac spent most of his childhood traveling with his family. In 1986, the family settled down in Baltimore, Maryland, where Tupac was enrolled in the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts. At the school, he excelled as a student, showcasing his talent for poetry, acting, and music. Later, the family relocated to Marin City, California, which turned out to be a turning point in his life.
In California, Tupac took to the streets and became involved in gang culture, which later influenced his music. He joined the rap group Digital Underground in 1990 and featured on two of their albums. In 1991, he released his solo debut album 2Pacalypse Now, which peaked at number 64 on the US Billboard. The album sold over 1.6 million copies worldwide. His second album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… gained more success, reaching number 24 on the US charts.
Despite achieving mainstream success, Tupac Shakur had his run-ins with the law. In 1994, he was arrested and convicted for sexual assault. During his incarceration, Tupac released his third album Me Against the World, which became his first album to reach the number one position on the US Billboard. After serving eight months in prison, Tupac was released and wasted no time in releasing his next album All Eyez on Me. This album became his best-selling work, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide.
Tupac’s life took a tragic turn on September 7, 1996, when he was shot by an unknown assailant in Las Vegas, Nevada, after attending a Mike Tyson fight. He succumbed to his injuries on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25.
After his death, several posthumous albums were released, all of which made it to the top 10 on the US charts. Tupac’s legacy continues to resonate in the lyrics of many legendary rappers who followed him. Artists such as J. Cole, The Game, and Eminem have all paid tribute to Shakur, with Eminem even stating that he learned how to create impactful songs from Tupac.
Tupac’s influence was formally recognized when he was inducted into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
Tupac Shakur’s influence extends beyond music, touching themes of social justice, identity, and resilience. Even after his untimely demise, his impact remains indelible, inspiring generations of artists and fans alike.
